Penguin Book Design
Context
A project for the class Graphic Design 1. The main goal of the project was to redesign the book cover for Murder Most Unladylike by Robin Stevens in a more modern way. Since this prompt came from Penguin Books, they provided a template for the book size with the puffin logos and barcode included.
Design Process
- Read the book to glean the tone and story
details that could potentially be on the cover - Sketch initial ideas and receive feedback from peers
- Refine the best idea and create a comp in computer
- Receive more feedback and fix issues from the feedback
Design Decisions
The story is set in 1930s at a middle school girl’s boarding school and has a lighthearted tone. The book’s audience is 9-12-year-olds, so I chose to keep the cover fun while also echoing some of the scenes from the book. The person carting the body in the wheelbarrow, the broken window, and the girls sneaking around at night are all moments in the book that would not give anything away to a potential reader while still rewarding those who have gotten to those points in the story already.
