Clarendon Type Booklet

Context

The main goal of this project was to create a type specimen book about the typeface Clarendon. The book is supposed to display all the families of the font for the reader to see, while also telling a compelling story along the way. The booklet needed to include:

  • The type family’s original purpose or audience
  • Examples of the family’s use
  • The family design characteristics
  • The designer’s background
  • Historical influences and context

Design Process

  • Research information on Clarendon
  • Brainstorm theme and story for the booklet
  • Write content for the spreads
  • Layout entire booklet
  • Sketch spread ideas
  • Revise spreads and move into inDesign
  • Create physical mockup
  • Revise booklet
  • Completion

Design Decisions

After researching the history of Clarendon and the creator, I chose to trace a story based in the Wild West because of the famous Clarendon-type woodblocks used during that time. The story follows the character 'Clarendon' who eventually becomes so popular that he is stolen by other type foundries.
